Your Spanish level, explained

Spanish levels are commonly described using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which organises language ability into six levels, from A1 to C2.

Your result gives you an estimate of where your Spanish currently sits on this scale, based mainly on the grammatical knowledge assessed in the test. It does not assess every language skill, such as speaking ability.

Basic user

A1

You can understand and use very basic everyday expressions and interact in simple situations with some support.

You can understand frequently used language and communicate in simple, routine situations about familiar topics and everyday needs.

Independent user

You can understand the main points on familiar topics, deal with many everyday and travel situations, and talk about experiences, interests and plans.

Proficient user

C1

You can understand demanding language, including implicit meaning, and use Spanish fluently and effectively in social, academic and professional situations.

C2

You can understand virtually everything you hear or read and express yourself very fluently, precisely and naturally, even in complex situations.

Spanish Level Test FAQs

Is the Spanish Level Test free?

Yes. The Spanish Level Test is completely free to take.

What Spanish levels does the test cover?

The test estimates your Spanish level from A1 to C2, using the six-level scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). A1 and A2 are Basic User levels, B1 and B2 are Independent User levels, and C1 and C2 are Proficient User levels.

How accurate is the Spanish Level Test?

The test is designed to give you a useful estimate of your current Spanish level based mainly on the grammatical knowledge it assesses. Language ability involves other skills too, including speaking, listening and interaction, so your result should be understood as a guide rather than a complete assessment of everything you can do in Spanish.

Is this an official Spanish qualification?

No. Your result is an estimate of your Spanish level and is not an official language qualification or CEFR certification. If you need to prove your Spanish level for academic, professional or administrative purposes, you should take an officially recognised examination.

Do I need to prepare for the test?

No. There's no need to study or prepare beforehand. The aim is to estimate your current level, so answer using the Spanish you already know and avoid dictionaries, translators or AI tools while taking the test.
